B. BioMinds Influence

I chose to intern in this program because it gave me the opportunity that is not widely available to many second year students, an undergraduate investigation. My research investigation is under the supervision of Professor Carlos Ríos Velázquez, PhD. The title of the investigation is “Using functional genomics approaches to develop biomarkers”. It will consist of using phage display, specifically the T7 phage. The target is bacterial cells with biomedical and/or biotechnology importance and interest. I chose the area of biology because its the area that captivates my attention. I am enthusiastic of my investigation because it covers the area of microbiology, genetics, and proteomics and other as well. The laboratory is located in the Biology building B-266. The laboratory has approximately 20 ongoing investigations. The group of B-266 is a very big one but still manages to have a lot of activities to unite the group and constantly provide support. Every Monday there is a meeting with the mentor to monitor progress, every first Monday of the months a Journal Club meeting is held to discuss a research article plus any other meeting arranged, like listening to a partner’s thesis defense.
For information of what is been done with biomarkers I have provided these links. The first one shows the importance of developing new biomarkers, the second one is the application of biomarkers in the Industry and the third one is a research article of using phage display in cancer tumors.
